The Columbia River has finally opened to keeper sturgeon fishing from _____ to ____ ! You can now keep legal-sized sturgeon in these areas :

Legal-size sturgeon is ___________

Plunking for Sturgeon can be very effective

First Opportunity in Years

The Lower Columbia Sturgeon fisheries were originally closed due to perceived over-fishing and low fish counts. This closure took pressure off of sturgeon and left only catch-and-release opportunity on the lower river. The population has recovered over the last several years bringing this new opportunity.

Short windows of retention periods above Bonneville Dam have kept a few anglers entertained, but those fishing the lower river have caught and released sturgeon, often with high-number days.

The Lower River should receive lots of fishing pressure during the opening, though sturgeon opportunity is widely spread in a number of areas. Deep holes that draw bait down near the bottom can usually be counted on but sturgeon can migrate into other areas. 'Chunk" style bait presentation is excellent both out of the boat or "plunked" from shore. Sand-shrimp or smelt are effective baits.

Enjoy the sturgeon opener and share this article.
